But when business challenges change daily, is there really anything that is not innovation?
Innovation happens when you change how a team works, use AI to solve an old problem, respond to new customer needs or make a decision without having all the answers. It happens every day, often without being called innovation.
The question is whether you are aware of the innovation you are already leading.
From unconscious to conscious innovation
Unconscious innovation is reactive. A challenge appears, people adapt and a new solution emerges. This can create progress, but the learning often stays within one team or depends on a few individuals.
Conscious innovation is more deliberate. It means noticing where innovation is already happening and asking:
What problem are we solving? Who are we creating value for? How could technology change what is possible? What should we test, develop or scale?
This does not mean turning every improvement into a formal innovation project. It means making conscious decisions about where to focus, what to learn and when to change direction.
Innovation is a leadership capability
Leading innovation means connecting people, technology and business. Leaders need to understand customer needs, make informed decisions about AI and emerging technology, and help teams explore new ideas without losing sight of business value. They also need to identify signals of change and prepare for more than one possible future.
For experienced professionals, innovation is no longer a separate discipline. It is part of strategic leadership.
