Feeling disconnected from your work can be difficult to explain. You might be performing well, meeting expectations and doing everything you’re supposed to do, yet still feel that something is missing.

Perhaps you’ve outgrown your role, your priorities have changed or you’re struggling to see how your work connects to what matters to you.

These feelings can be a useful invitation to reflect. What gives you energy? What would you like to do more of? And what might need to change for your work to feel more meaningful?

Change brings opportunity

The world of work is constantly evolving. New technologies are changing how we work, different skills are becoming valuable, and career paths are becoming less predictable.

While this uncertainty can make it tempting to stick with what’s familiar, change can also create opportunities to explore new interests, develop different skills and reconsider what you want from your career.

Sometimes, finding a new sense of purpose starts with recognising that your priorities have changed and giving yourself permission to explore what comes next.

Feeling stuck? Start with these questions

Before making any big career decisions, take some time to understand what’s behind the way you’re feeling.

Ask yourself:

What gives me energy at work?
Think about the tasks, conversations or challenges that leave you feeling motivated.

What drains my energy?
Are there particular responsibilities, routines or situations that consistently leave you feeling frustrated or disconnected?

What would I like to do more of?
Consider which interests, strengths or skills you’d like to explore further.

What’s one thing I could change?
It might be taking on a different responsibility, having a conversation with your manager or making time to develop a new skill.

You don’t need to figure everything out at once. These questions can help you identify where to begin.

Sometimes, feeling drained is less about finding a new direction and more about your current working conditions. If stress, workload or a lack of support are affecting your wellbeing, addressing those challenges may be an important first step.

Ikigai - Reflect on what matters to you

When work starts to feel disconnected from your values or interests, it can help to explore what gives you a sense of purpose.

A useful starting point is Ikigai, a Japanese concept often translated as “reason for being”. Although the traditional concept extends beyond work, a modern career-focused interpretation uses four questions to explore professional direction:

  • What do you love doing?
  • What are you good at?
  • What does the world need?
  • What could you be paid for?

You don’t need to have all the answers. Start by reflecting on which parts of your current work give you energy, which feel less meaningful and what you might want to explore next.
