Can Facilitation Courses Stretch a 20-Year Leadership Career?

Can a three-day facilitation course experience really deepen the practice of someone with 20+ years in psychology and leadership? For Benedita Salinas, the answer was yes — but not because she needed more theory.

She travelled from Porto to Stockholm to join Hyper Island’s Facilitation Course in search of something more precise: presence.

Today, she is co-founder of Salinas80, a family-owned consultancy designing immersive learning experiences for organisations navigating change.

But even with decades of experience in psychology, human development, and leadership, she felt called to sharpen her craft.

“Transformation happens when people feel safe enough to be real.”

That belief has guided her work for years. In Stockholm, she chose to test it again.

20 Years in Psychology — And Still Learning

Benedita’s career spans more than two decades in psychology, leadership development, and human growth.

She has completed programmes in:

  •  Design Thinking for Sustainability

  •  MBTI certification

  •  Purpose-Driven Leadership

  •  Experiential learning design

Salinas80 was born during the COVID-19 lockdown — a moment she describes as both uncertain and catalytic.

format_quote"It was a moment of uncertainty that I chose to transform into opportunity."

Yet even with this depth of experience, she felt something shifting. Leadership was becoming more complex, groups were more emotionally charged, and organisations were under pressure. She didn’t need more content. She needed greater depth in how she showed up.

Seeking the Human Side of Leadership in a Complex World

Many senior leaders reach a point where frameworks alone are not enough. At that stage, refinement matters more than expansion. Benedita describes her starting doubt clearly:

format_quote"How do you hold space for real transformation when teams are stressed, distracted, and under pressure?"

She felt a need to refine how she leads groups, especially in vulnerable or transitional moments. This is where facilitation training for leadership became relevant.

Experiential Learning in Stockholm: A Leadership Lab

Hyper Island’s approach stood out for one reason: it treats facilitation as a lived practice rather than abstract theory.

format_quote"My intention was to go deeper into the human dimension of leading groups, and Hyper Island’s experiential, creative, and human-centred approach resonated with my values."

The course in Stockholm became an immersion.

Leaving Porto and stepping into a room of international professionals created immediate vulnerability and focus. There were no daily distractions. Only practice.

Hyper Island’s methodology is grounded in the Experiential Learning Spiral: Do → Reflect → Generalise → Apply

  • Participants facilitate.
  • They receive feedback.
  • They reflect.
  • They adjust.
  • They try again.

The Hyper Island Toolbox — including structured reflection, check-ins, check-outs, and group feedback methods — is applied in real time.

For senior professionals, this format matters. It is not conceptual discussion about facilitation. It is lived facilitation.

From Directing to Holding Space

When asked about her biggest takeaway, Benedita doesn’t hesitate.

format_quote“The biggest insight for me was the confirmation that facilitation is all about presence.”

In practical terms, that meant:

  •  Allowing silence instead of rushing to fill it.

  •  Trusting collective intelligence instead of steering every moment.

  •  Letting learning unfold non-linearly.

  •  Responding to the group’s energy rather than sticking rigidly to plan.

This shift may sound subtle, but in leadership environments, it changes outcomes.

When teams feel psychologically safe, they engage more deeply. When facilitators regulate the pace of conversation, complexity becomes manageable. When reflection is built into the process, insights last longer.

At Hyper Island, these qualities are sometimes labelled “soft skills.” In reality, they are performance-critical leadership competencies.

Since returning to Porto, she has integrated this more emergent approach into leadership off-sites and immersive learning experiences at Salinas80.

What a Hyper Island Facilitation Course Experience Actually Adds

For experienced practitioners, the question is often: What new value can a short course realistically add?

For Benedita, the outcomes were concrete:

  • Sharper awareness of group dynamics.

  • Greater comfort with silence and ambiguity.

  • Stronger integration of reflection practices.

  • Increased confidence in handling emotional intensity.

  • A renewed connection to purpose in her work.

In short, she left with a refined capability to guide groups, hold space, and lead with presence.

Looking to Deepen — Not Just Expand — Your Leadership Practice?

Benedita’s experience shows that growth at a senior level isn’t about adding more frameworks — it’s about refining how you show up in the moments that matter.

When leadership becomes more complex, presence, awareness, and the ability to hold space are what make the difference.

Explore the Facilitation Course at Hyper Island and see how a focused, experiential learning environment can help you deepen your practice, not by adding more, but by sharpening what already works.
