THE CHALLENGE

Turning complex global challenges into practical learning

Sustainable Business (Hållbart Näringsliv) is one of Sweden's leading conferences on sustainable business, organised by Dagens industri and Aktuell Hållbarhet. It brings together business leaders, decision-makers and sustainability professionals to explore how geopolitical shifts, new regulations, emerging technologies and environmental challenges are reshaping business.

With a programme spanning everything from AI and circular business models to climate policy and global economic change, the conference offered a wide range of expert insights and perspectives.

The challenge was to move beyond presentations and create opportunities for participants to reflect, exchange perspectives and apply what they had learned.

Hyper Island was invited to design and facilitate interactive sessions that would help participants make sense of complex challenges, explore possible futures and turn new insights into practical ways of thinking and acting.

THE APPROACH

Creating space to reflect, challenge assumptions and explore the future

Hyper Island's Pär Hellstadius, Head of Learning Development, and Anders Lundkvist, Senior Learning Designer and Facilitator, brought Hyper Island's hands-on learning methodology to the conference through two interactive sessions.

Reflection & Direction

After a morning of expert presentations, participants were invited to pause, reflect and make sense of what they had heard.

Through guided reflection and shared conversations, the session helped participants identify key insights, explore different perspectives and approach the rest of the conference with greater curiosity, intention and focus.

The Future as a Tool

In an interactive workshop, participants explored how futures thinking can help organisations navigate uncertainty and make better decisions today.

Using practical Future Foresight methods, participants were encouraged to think beyond immediate challenges, question assumptions and explore alternative futures.

The workshop introduced approaches that participants could bring back to their organisations to lead future-focused conversations, encourage creative thinking and turn uncertainty into insight and direction.

Both sessions reflected Hyper Island's approach to learning: rather than simply presenting new ideas, participants were actively involved in exploring, discussing and applying them.

RESULTS & IMPACT

From passive listening to active participation

The collaboration demonstrated how interactive learning can strengthen the value of a business conference by giving participants opportunities to engage with complex topics rather than simply listen to expert perspectives.

The sessions created opportunities for participants to:

  • Reflect and connect insights: Process information from the conference and explore its relevance to their own work.
  • Experience practical methods: Learn futures thinking techniques that can be used to facilitate conversations and explore strategic challenges within their organisations.
  • Challenge assumptions: Consider different perspectives and possible futures rather than focusing only on today's challenges.
  • Turn uncertainty into direction: Explore how long-term thinking can support better decisions in the present.

To support continued learning, Hyper Island also made the workshop material from The Future as a Tool available for participants to use with their own teams.

By combining expert content with professional facilitation, collaborative reflection and practical exercises, Hyper Island demonstrated how conferences can become more than places to share information. They can create opportunities for people to learn together, think differently and develop the capabilities needed to navigate change.
