Learning Outcomes

Understanding and using futures to inform the present

Participants will learn the fundamentals of futures thinking and foresight, the importance of understanding future alternatives to guide strategic thinking and the role of cognitive biases and fallacies in distorting our futures thinking.

Exploring Change and Building Futures Scenarios

Participants will learn a structured process for understanding the dynamics of change and planning for alternative scenarios from interconnected factors and systemic relationships.

Transitioning from Foresight to Strategy

Participants will learn how alternative futures have strategic implications and transitioning these insights into futures-informed strategic decision-making. This also involves identifying and making sense of the uncertainties that matter the most in decision-making under uncertainty.

Simon

Simon Fuglsang Østergaard

Simon has been part of Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies since 2016 and has led and participated in many advisory projects exploring long-term strategic implications through scenario planning, trend analysis, and strategic foresight broadly. He has worked with high-level national and international clients and stakeholders across business and society, helping organizations challenge outdated beliefs and misguided assumptions about the future, to enhance preparedness and strategic decision-making. On a day-to-day basis, Simon works intensively with exploring how shifts in technology, demographics and people’s behavior raise critical uncertainties for societies and businesses across the board. Simon brings his experience with working with strategic foresight and futures-oriented issues to our Applied Strategic Foresight course.
