From Improvised Leadership to Structured Growth: Justin’s Hyper Island Master’s Experience
For many experienced professionals, the question isn’t whether to keep learning. It’s how to grow without stepping away from your career.
If you’ve built your career through experience, instinct, and figuring things out as you go, you might eventually ask yourself:
Would a structured leadership education actually make me better — or just slow me down?
For Justin Waugh, that question led him to Hyper Island.
Today, he works at the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Copenhagen as a Design and Digital Visibility Architect, shaping UX strategies while also leading a software development team supporting international missions.
But before joining Hyper Island’s master’s programme, he felt something was missing.
When “Learn as You Go” Wasn’t Enough
Originally from Edinburgh and now based in Denmark for over a decade, Justin had built his career through hands-on experience. He describes his leadership style at the time as improvisational.
“A bit too improvised. Think jazz rather than classical,” he says.
It worked. But it wasn’t structured. He considered an MBA. On paper, it made sense. In reality, it didn’t.
“An MBA felt too corporate for my taste.”
He wasn’t looking for boardroom polish. He wanted something that would challenge how he thought, worked, and led — without turning him into someone he wasn’t. That’s when he discovered Hyper Island.
Why Hyper Island Felt Like the Right Fit
What drew Justin in wasn’t a traditional curriculum. It was the mindset.
“It wasn’t about suits and PowerPoint decks — it was about thinking differently.”
He was also drawn to the people. The programme attracted professionals from different industries, backgrounds, and countries.

“The crew I studied with was brilliant — diverse, thoughtful, and just the right amount of weird.”
It felt less like a classroom and more like a group of curious professionals pushing each other forward.
The First Week at Hyper Island: Brilliant Minds and Self-Doubt
When Justin first stepped onto campus, he had doubts. After reading the biographies of his fellow students, he wondered if he had accidentally joined a gathering of overachievers.
But by the end of the first week, something had shifted. They bonded quickly. The shared vulnerability of learning in public, giving feedback, and experimenting together changed the dynamic.
“I suspect Hyper puts something in the water,” he jokes. “By Monday, I was convinced I’d accidentally joined a cult — but one with great merch and better vibes.”
Under the humour, he emphasises something real: the learning is intense, collaborative, and personal.
How the Programme Changed His Leadership
At first, the methodology surprised him.
“It was less ‘Here’s a checklist’ and more ‘Here’s a compass — figure it out.”
That approach was sometimes frustrating. There wasn’t always a clear answer. But that was the point.
“It taught me how to learn, not just what to learn.”
For an experienced leader, that shift mattered more than memorising frameworks. It changed how he approached uncertainty.
During the programme, Justin worked with:
- Design Thinking principles
- Team development frameworks (including Susan Wheelan’s models)
- Facilitation techniques
- Psychological insights into group dynamics
But the value wasn’t in recognising the terminology. It was in applying it.
He became more intentional in how he structured meetings, supported his team, and navigated conflict.
The biggest shift, however, was confidence.
“Before Hyper Island, the idea of public speaking made my palms sweat. Now? I’m more confident than ever.”
Not just on stage — in any situation that required him to step forward and lead visibly.
Before Hyper Island, Justin led instinctively. After it, he led intentionally.
A Standout Project at Hyper Island
One memorable project involved pitching a concept for recycling wearable tech.
Justin’s team staged a theatrical live presentation combined with a pre-recorded prototype, even featuring a drone collecting an Apple Watch for recycling.
“It was the perfect blend of slick execution and over-the-top theatre,” he laughs.”
It was bold. Slightly ridiculous. Completely committed.
And it reinforced something important: growth happens outside your comfort zone.
Leading While Learning: Takeaways from the Programme
One of the most important takeaways for Justin was this:
“Hyper showed me I can lead while learning — and learn while leading.”
He no longer sees learning as something separate from work. It’s integrated.
Today, he mentors others and finds himself learning as much from them as they do from him.
The programme didn’t turn him into a different kind of leader. It helped him become a more structured, reflective, and confident version of himself.
Is the Programme Worth It for Experienced Leaders?
If you’re already in a leadership role, you might question whether a master’s degree is necessary.
Justin’s experience suggests a better question:
Will structured, experiential learning make you more intentional in how you lead?
For him, the answer was yes.
Advice for Future Applicants
His advice is simple:
“Take the plunge. If you’re already reading this, you’re probably the kind of person who should be at Hyper.”
He adds:
“You’ll be surrounded by people as talented, ambitious, and delightfully odd as you are — and that’s where the magic happens.”
Considering Your Own Leadership Development?
Justin’s story illustrates what a Hyper Island master’s leadership experience can offer experienced professionals:
Not a reset. Not corporate polish. But structured growth, real collaboration, and increased confidence in how you lead.
