In the last couple of years, extended reality (XR) has evolved from a novel concept into a crucial, disruptive technology for the future workplace. Between 2020 and 2026, MarketWatch predicts that global XR production will grow by 46.5% per year. Hyper Island has acted fast by adding a program for the Metaverse, specialized in XR Creative Developer, to its offering.
Due to be launched in August 2022, the XR Creative Developer program comes as a result of the rise in immersive technologies for XR and the increasing demand for creative developers who are able to design and develop for virtual and augmented realities.
format_quote“The way we connect with people, collect information will change immensely with the emerging trend of immersive experiences. The time when a virtual reality is no longer distinguishable from our reality might be closer as we think,” says Jörg Teichgraeber, Head of School at Hyper Island.
An important reason for the increase in demand for people who can design and develop for virtual and augmented realities is that the price for hardware is finally dropping down. Similar to how affordable smartphones decreased the price of copying photos to almost zero; new, cheaper, and lighter devices will make new, virtual worlds accessible for the masses.
format_quote“We’re so happy to see this demand for creative developers being heard by the Swedish Vocational Authorities. It’s very exciting to be able to offer a program for XR design and development that focuses on relevant virtual reality (VR) software and tools such as Digital Twins, Spatial Computing and Collaborative VR, as well as developing potential future application possibilities with XR technology,” continues Jörg.
This also ties in with Hyper Island’s latest plea for digital leaders of the future to adopt what they call “Digital Bravery”. This is where leaders learn to appreciate the connections between ‘tech-savvy’ roles—such as Data Scientists, AI experts, App Developers—as well as the scope and possibilities of a wide and ever-changing range of technologies in order to help develop exactly that type of talent. XR technology or extended reality—the collective name for applications in Virtual, Augmented and Mixed reality—is developing rapidly and is being applied in more and more industries, but the lack of competence is hampering development and Sweden has lagged behind. The “new normal”, post-pandemic, is also another factor driving the demand for XR and immersive technologies.
Lisa Boldt-Christmas, Research and Development Director at Hyper Island, says, “We know that the expansion of the vocational education system of recent years is complete, and that the competition is extremely tight. Yet, we constantly try to push and challenge The Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education (Myndigheten för Yrkeshögskolan, MYH) to take up new, professional roles for tomorrow; roles that will keep Sweden among the top performers in innovation for years to come. This year, we not only got to keep four amazing programs, which is not a small feat, but we also grew with the addition of one program. I’m incredibly happy and grateful for all the support and engagement that we get from our industry network and I’m really proud of the work that the team has done for this application cycle.”
