A master’s degree is more than just an academic pursuit. At Hyper Island, students engage with real-world challenges, hands-on learning, and the evolving digital landscape.

We spoke with Ceyda Karanfil, a master’s student in the Digital Experience Design (DXD) program, to learn about her path—how she discovered Hyper Island, adapted to life in Sweden, and how the experience is shaping her future.

Looking to grow and finding a path through Hyper Island

Born and raised in Turkey, Ceyda holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design. After gaining early experience as a UX/UI designer, she realized she wanted to deepen her skills and broaden her perspective. However, when she first explored master’s programs, nothing seemed to really spark her interest.

I think we do this in well-meaning, hoping to spark change but we also focus on what we perceive as our shortcomings, adding pressure on ourselves to change or fix something. But what is missing is self-compassion and the pressure might even have the opposite effect to what you are trying to achieve.

“Most felt uninspiring, like I’d be studying just for the sake of it,” she recalls.

It wasn’t until a mentor in the design industry recommended Hyper Island that everything clicked. The mentor described Hyper Island as a place that prepares students directly for the industry—completely different from traditional education.

Even before doing my own research, I felt it was the right path for me.

Now, having moved away from Turkey for the first time to study in Stockholm, Ceyda feels she made the perfect choice. During her final year of Industrial Design, she discovered her passion for digital design, making Hyper Island’s Digital Experience Design Master’s program the ideal fit.

With everything moving so quickly in the digital world, I knew I needed a solid foundation to grow in my career I wanted to build on my skills and prepare for what’s next.

The Hyper Island Experience

“When I arrived at Hyper, I felt overwhelmed and lost,” Ceyda admits, reflecting on her first week. Due to visa delays, she joined the program late and found herself struggling to adjust.

“At first, I kept questioning everything we did. But eventually, I let go and trusted the process. That’s when everything began to make sense.”

She soon realized that every activity and lesson was not only building her professional skills but also preparing her for life.

The Hyper Island Way isn’t something you fully understand until you live it. But once you do, it all comes together.

A memorable module: Design & Creativity

One project that stands out to Ceyda is her first module: Design & Creativity, where her team worked with SL, Stockholm’s public transportation company.

“Our team dynamics were incredible from day one. Even though we were just getting to know each other, there was complete trust and harmony. This made the experience not only productive but also deeply enjoyable.”

The project pushed her out of her comfort zone, allowing her to grow both professionally and personally.

We gained so much—practical knowledge, theoretical insights, and a lot of personal growth. Even though we’ve moved on to other teams, the friendships and support we built during that module remain strong.

Balancing Theory and Practice

At Hyper Island, Ceyda appreciates the blend of theoretical learning and real-world application. Each module centers around a real client, offering students the chance to apply what they learn in live projects.

“We’re encouraged to push boundaries and explore creative solutions. It’s not just about learning theory—it’s about finding unique ways to apply it in practice.” She shares.

This balance has taught Ceyda that theory alone isn’t enough. “The key is integrating your own perspective into the work and using what you’ve learned in the most impactful way.” She continues.

Moving Abroad and Adapting to Life in Sweden

Moving to Stockholm from Turkey was both exciting and challenging. Despite having never visited before, Ceyda felt reassured by friends and family who spoke highly of the city.

Even with all the photos and videos I’d seen, nothing compared to seeing Stockholm in person. It’s stunning, and the energy here is unique.

She quickly noticed cultural differences, such as the slower pace of life and earlier closing times for shops and cafes. However, she found that these differences encouraged a healthier work-life balance.

Overall, Ceyda feels the transition has been smoother than anticipated, with Sweden’s culture and systems improving her quality of life in unexpected ways.

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations

“Even with just a year of work experience before Hyper, the projects I’ve done here have given me more practical experience than most new graduates. I’ve already faced real-world challenges, thanks to the client projects we tackle,” Ceyda reflects on how Hyper Island has shaped her career and personal goals.

Looking ahead, she’s focused on securing a collaboration with a European company for her Individual Research Project (IRP).

At Hyper Island, we’re trained not just as designers but as entrepreneurs. That foundation gives me confidence to explore different career paths and build on my experiences.

Closing Reflections and Advice

For Ceyda, Hyper Island has been a journey of self-discovery and growth.

“It’s been an enjoyable and insightful experience, full of surprises. You never know what to expect next.”

Her advice for future applicants?

“Hyper Island isn’t for everyone, but if you’re willing to trust the system and take ownership of your learning, it’s incredibly rewarding. Every moment—good or bad—is an opportunity to learn.” She shares.
