Application task brief expand_more expand_less

Data Analytics Application Task: 'Asking the Right Question'

Every data project starts with a question. The quality of that question often determines the quality of the insights that follow. In this task, your challenge is to ask a good question that could be explored using data and explain how you’d approach it.

In 250 words or less, describe:

  1. A question you would like to explore using data (e.g., “How can we reduce food waste in restaurants?” or “When are people most likely to cancel subscriptions?”)
  2. What kind of data you would need to answer that question
  3. How that data could help someone make a better decision or take action

(Tips: You don’t need to collect or analyse real data, just think logically and creatively.)

Use of AI

You are welcome to use AI tools as long as it follows these 2 principles:

  1. Acknowledge your use of AI - Be transparent. If you use AI, note briefly where and how.
  2. Explain your own added value - Reflect on how you built on the AI’s output. What did you adjust, critique, or extend?

Evaluation Criteria  (3 Points per question max 12 points)

  1. Quality of the Question - Is the question clear, focused, and meaningful for data exploration?
  2. Data Relevance - Does the applicant logically identify data that would help answer the question?
  3. Applied Insight - Does the applicant connect the question and data to an actionable decision or outcome?
  4. Clarity of Communication - Is the answer structured, concise, and easy to understand?
